Silage
• CanaMaize corn makes excellent high quality silage
• Average dry matter yields gathered in Canamaize yield research over three years (see
Canamaize Grazing yields) can be converted into silage yields at 65% moisture for comparison
o Alberta’s average dry matter yield of 5.6 tonnes/ acre converts to 14.5 tonnes silage/acre.
o Saskatchewan’s average of 4.61 tonnes /acre converts to 11.9 tonnes silage/ acre
o Manitoba average is 15.8 tonnes of silage / acre over years 2001- 2003
Whether to graze or silage CanaMaize depends on the producer’s preference.
The cost of ensiling and storage and the additional work involved in feeding silage often makes grazing CanaMaize a more economical option. Some producers have found ensiling CanaMaize is worth the work and cost in order to ensure they have enough quality feed on hand.
